Like the “24/7 news cycle” we now have a “24/7 business cycle”. I see this “always open” mind-set as incredibly liberating and natural. You?

Here’s my take on it…

As it relates to the organization of MY life, and work, I like to think success looks something like the lifestyle I imagine of those in pre-industrial revolution agriculture based societies. For some reason the personal autonomy I associate with these independent spirits “feels right” to me.

I see the farmer tending the fields and animals according to his judgment, experience and ambition, not according to an arbitrary schedule developed to regulate production and simplify payroll.

For me today there is a freedom that comes from accepting and exercising my personal responsibility and autonomy. I am responsible for setting my “off-time” as well as my work-time. Sure, I see how people can get sucked into sacrificing personal and family time in pursuit of the next buck, or at the whims of needy clients, but that’s where we have the self-discipline and wisdom to exercise personal judgment.

I can, and frequently do, take hours off during the middle of the day, in the middle of the week, and I often work between 5:30 to 8:00 in the morning and sometimes between 5:00 to 10:00PM. I do this because it serves ME. I’m in charge of my time and how I use it, but I’m not out of touch and that is a blessing (in my humble opinion) of your current  times.

Now with my “Smart Phone” (I use an iPhone), I can receive e-mails, form submissions, social inquires, etc. nearly anywhere I am. With a glance I can determine urgency (like a farmer might decide to help a horse through a breech birth or work double time to get the hay up before an incoming storm hits.) I know I’m a bit weird (although I prefer to think of it as romantic) to think of my modern life using the terms and metaphors from pre-industrial times, but it works for me. 🙂

If you are a small business person I hope you allow our “connected society” to liberate rather than imprison you. Only you can choose to see, and feel about, your place in modern world. For me the 24-7 business cycle is liberating, allowing me more freedom of choice and a greater since of personal dignity through exercising personal discipline and discernment.
