I originally posted these Mark Cuban Rules for Start-ups about 6 months ago but I thought it was worth a re-post in case you missed it the first time… or as just a reminder.

Mark say’s ” My “rules” below aren’t just for those founding the companies, but for those who are considering going to work for them, as well.”

Do you ever watch Shark Tank, the reality television show that features aspiring entrepreneurs making pitches to a panel of potential investors?

I catch the show from time to time and when I do I always find myself attracted to Mark Cuban. Mark CubanHe seems to look at the pitches in a way that is different from the other “sharks”, so when I read the headline-  Mark Cuban’s 12 Rules for Startups, I was drawn in, again I liked what he had to say…

Here are the first 4 rules:

1. Don’t start a company unless it’s an obsession and something you love.

2. If you have an exit strategy, it’s not an obsession.

3. Hire people who you think will love working there.

4. Sales Cure All. Know how your company will make money and how you will actually make sales.

What IS a “Pull Component”?

A Pull Component is something, anything, which will pull your target visitors to your website. For years “White Papers” have been used to pull visitors to websites, free courses have been used, in fact I use a FREE e-course Pull Component on this site- http://imgmembers.com/free-e-course.

customer_magnetHere’s an excellent Pull Component we just implemented for a client who is a guest on radio interviews, he needed to have something compelling and engaging to PULL his listeners to his website. It’s a FREE Integrated Wellness Assessment. Check it out – http://thegracewellnesscenter.com/

Of course this Assessment will also be used to Pull visitors from social media and word of mouth as well.

Could you use some help developing an effective Pull Component?

If so pop me an email or give me a call – 541-941-4840

Here’s an excellent example of how to use a personalized video to land new customers.

I was watching a TV program and the David Lynch Foundation was mentioned. After doing some research I decided I would approach the organization about becoming a celebrity spokesperson for them. Their website had the name and email address of a contact person.

Next I wrote a short script and shot the short (1:20) video below, hosted it at YouTube and  embedded it in a new page on my WordPress website (the page was left off of the navigation). I then composed an email to the contact person with a link to the video.

All of this took me less than an hour to do.

Within a few minutes of sending the email I received a very positive response saying he would pass the video to others in the organization. Within hours it was viewed by more than 3 dozen people in 7 states. (I was able to see this with my Google Analytics.)

Here’s the video….

The design of your website plays a HUGE part in the success of your website. Many website developers, designers and business owners want a website that is modern, sleek and sexy.

The question is do these sexier websites convert a higher percentage of visitors into customers, the same percent or 75% less than their less glamorous counterparts?

SEO has become “earned media“, meaning that your business must EARN top rankings. This means that SEO can no longer be an afterthought, something you “do” once the website is developed. In fact, SEO is no longer even limited to your website. SEO is the aggregation of the entire culture of your business.

SEO is no longer a “way of marketing”, like PPC or paid social.

SEO is a website the loads quickly, is up to date, is rich with content, is well respected amongst peers and users… SEO is content that is engaging and shared.

SEO is NOT putting keywords into tags, or content, or getting a bunch of websites to link to your website. SEO is NOT manipulation of any kind.

SEO is integrity. SEO is demonstrating consistency with your actions, values, methods, measures and principles, aligning visitor

expectations and outcomes.

SEO is having visitors who like what you do and how you do it.

SEO is everything about your website and everything about your business.

As SEO has evolved so has the focus of my coaching. If you could use some help obtaining and maintaining top Google rankings give me a call. 541-941-4840

Easy way to make Google work better. Google likes directories so get listed in them… and then get your site to rank organically right behind them.

I just analyzed the new visits to one of my websites; this one.

I found that of the many thousands of new visitors who arrive at this site from my organic rankings on Google , Bing and Yahoo! 67.4% are landing on my blog posts!

Once these new visitors arrive at the site they spend 3 minutes and 48 seconds looking around. Of course this results in many new subscribers to my blog and a percentage of those subscribers ultimately turn into customers.

By consistently adding fresh valuable content to your website you are demonstrating to Google that your website deserves top rankings.

I also set up goals in my Google Analytics, this allows me to see the number of subscribers each post produces.  Here is one of the posts that consistently converts new visitors into subscribers- http://imgmembers.com/how-much-should-i-pay-for-seo/

I’m often asked how I maintain so many top rankings. One of the keys for me has been self promotion. Google like experts- become one. I share my knowledge with others through social channels, speaking events and guest blog posts and articles.

Remember, Google likes experts and experts share valuable and interesting content.

The key to proper thinking about building links that will help boost your ranks on Google is to not think about the link at all.

Google wants to know who likes you. Is it your customers? The press? Universities? Resource sites? Independent review sites? Local directories?  The list goes on and on but here’s the real question…

Which of these types of sites would YOU like to like you even if there were no such things as Search Engines? In other words which of these relationships directly benefit your business?

Customers? Sure. So you want links from them. Think Facebook and Review sites.

Local Directories? Sure. Get listed in them.

The Press? Possibly. Think in terms of creating content that other publishers would share.

Forget about building the links, instead focus on building relationships. Relationships with customers, with publishers, with…  you name it.

Business is built on relationships, make building them your business.
